Instructor Tips

Expert advice to help you pass your test and stay safe on UK roads.

1

Approaching Roundabouts

Leeds is famous for its busy roundabouts! Always remember: Mirrors, Signal, Position, Speed, Gear (MSPSG). Decide early which exit you need. If you're turning right (3rd exit or more), stick to the right lane. If straight on, usually left lane (unless marked otherwise). Give way to the right!

2

Conquering Test Nerves

It's okay to be nervous on test day. The examiner knows this! Focus on your breathing. If you make a mistake, don't dwell on it—it might only be a minor. Keep driving safely. Remember, the examiner is just looking for a safe drive, not a perfect one.

3

Mirror Checks

The #1 reason for failing tests in the UK is lack of effective observation. You must check mirrors before changing speed or direction. Don't just move your eyes; move your head slightly so the examiner can see you checking!

4

Meeting Traffic

On narrow residential streets, always look well ahead. If there's an obstruction on your side, you must give way to oncoming traffic. Don't force your way through. If in doubt, hold back. Courtesy is key to safety.

5

Clutch Control

Stalling happens to the best of us. If you stall, secure the car (handbrake), restart, and check your blind spots before moving off again. Panicking leads to rushing. Take a second to reset.
